COUNCIL tenants will soon have a choice of three days on which to pay their monthly rent.

Those who pay by Direct Debit can pay on the 10th or 20th of the month, as well as the current first-day option.

Councillor John Smith, housing spokesman, said Direct Debit was an easy and efficient way to pay bills.

"You are guaranteed an immediate refund in the unlikely event of an error occurring," he said. "You are free to cancel at any time and you will always be advised at least ten working days in advance of any changes. That gives you total control over the amount payable."

Coun Smith added: "One of the things our tenants have been telling us is that having just one collection date in each month can cause problems for them. Therefore we have introduced these two additional dates. which should be acceptable to all. Those who switch to Direct Debit can select the date most convenient to them, and those already paying in this way may also change their payment date."

The changes start in January, but tenants can make arrangements now. They can contact the council's housing finance staff on 253 5545 or pick up a Direct Debit form from Bury Town Hall or any local housing office.
