FIREFIGHTERS worked round the clock to tackle a fire at a Ramsbottom paper mill.

Five fire appliances attended the scene at the height of Thursday night's (Dec 5) blaze at Mondipaper UK on Bridge Street. Crews were still dampening down on Sunday afternoon (Dec 8).

Emergency crews were alerted just after 9pm after a fire broke out in a storage warehouse containing large bales of paper. No one was injured.

Bridge Street was reduced to one lane and police were called to direct traffic as crews from Bury and Ramsbottom tackled the blaze which re-ignited after being brought under control in the early hours of Friday.

Initial reports that the fire was on Ramsbottom Lane caused traffic chaos as drivers came up Bridge Street to avoid the blaze. Temporary traffic lights had to be installed to control the gridlocked traffic.

Firefighters were still at the scene over the weekend dampening down with the help of warehouse workers who used heavy equipment to remove bales from the storage area.

A spokesman for the fire service said that the reason for the fire, which caused some structural damage to the warehouse, was still being investigated.

A joint investigation, between the police and the fire service, is now being undertaken to find the cause.
