THE Bradshaw Mummers joined the Britannia Coconutters for a 30th birthday anniversary with a spectacular performance in Ramsbottom.

The mummers group, who came with blackened faces, were formed at the Bradshaw Tavern Folk Club on the outskirts of Halifax for the club's 1972 New Years' Eve party.

Although the club closed several years ago, the name survives through the Mummers, who have gone on to appear at major festivals throughout the country.

They specialise in taking the traditional mumming themes of death and resurrection and good versus evil.

To conform with tradition, they blacken their faces so the Devil cannot recognise them.

Linda De Ruijter, Ramsbottom events organiser, said: "We were very lucky to have the Bradshaw Mummers in town. They put on a wonderful spectacle accompanied by the Britannia Coconutters."
