SPECIAL children from Bolton, Bury and Atherton have been heading up and away for a magic festive treat this Christmas.

Yesterday groups of local children were among 156 on a ChildFlight Santa flight from Manchester Airport. The youngsters were treated like VIPs for the day on the one-hour pleasure flight over the Northern skies.

All the children were either ill, had made a special contribution to their communities, received achievement awards or would not normally be able to take part in such a flight.

The group included nearly 30 people from Harvey House and the Carers' Partnership in Bury and five people from Two Porches School in Atherton.

Today 140 more children, including several living in Bolton women's refuges, were due to enjoy a similar flight courtesy of holiday company My Travel.

All the children taking part were nominated for the Flight of Fantasy by the Variety Club or NSPCC.
