THE Shakers kicked off their official pre-season friendly programme with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Chorley.

A goal in each half from trialist Steve Macauley, the former Crewe skipper, and 17-year-old Dave Nugent gave Andy Preece's side the edge.

The Bury boss used the game to give run-outs to every first team player as well as a handful of the club's promising youngsters.

There was also a surprise appearance from former Shaker Andy Woodward who, along with Macauley, has been training with the club following his release from Halifax Town.

The only first teamers not to feature were injured quartet David Borley (hernia), Gareth Seddon (back), Ian Lawson (groin) and Paul O'Shaughnessy (bug).

The Bury boss was pleased with the run-out especially as it came on the back of a 2-0 victory against Blackpool on Friday. Jon Newby and the manager himself were on target in the closed doors game.

"We've had a busy couple of days but they were both good workouts and it's good that we are keeping clean sheets," he said.

"It was a bit difficult to get the ball down and play on the Chorley pitch but it was a good game and it served the purpose.

"I was especially pleased with way the young lads played.

"Some of these 17 and 18 year olds are going to be needed next season and one or two of them could end up playing 15 to 20 games.

Headed

"Its good for them to play with the senior professionals in matches like these."

Macauley headed the Shakers into the lead from a Chris Billy corner deep into first half injury time while Nugent fired home from close range ten minutes from time following good work by youngster Simon Whalley.

Whalley looked a lively customer during his spell on the field and his performance didn't go unnoticed by Preece.

"I used Simon as an example in the dressing room," he said.

"If we all play with that ability and enthusiasm we'll have not problems this season.

"He looked lively, sharp and had a bit of quality about him as well."

The Shakers have two more behind closed door matches this week travelling to Blackburn Rovers today then Leeds United on Thursday before the annual trip to Radcliffe Boro on Saturday (3pm).
