AN electricity transformer exploded last night spreading debris for 30 ft.
Power in properties close to the substation in Griffin Street, Mill Hill, was affected when the 6.6volt unit burned out at 10.20pm.
Fire crew said the explosion was caused by a fault in the terminal box and made lights flicker throughout the borough. United Utilities brought in a temporary generator to restore power in the area.
Sub-officer Tony Ashworth, of Blackburn Fire and Rescue, said: "It was a violent explosion."
