BOSSES at First North Western are appealing for drivers' union ASLEF to call off its latest strikes for the sake of passengers.

The union has announced that its members will walk out in three more 48 hour stoppages on December 21, December 31 and February 2, hitting the Christmas shopping and New Year period.

First North Western runs the East Lancashire line from Clitheroe to Manchester and Preston to Colne. Union and company have been in dispute for several months over pay, despite the offer of a 19 per cent rise over three years.

First North Western managing director Vernon Barker said: "We are optimistic that ASLEF's executive committee will settle this dispute. We at First North Western have done everything in our power to reach an agreement.

"We hope that ASLEF will withdraw the threat of strike action for the sake of our passengers."
