CYCLISTS, walkers and horse riders in Rossendale will be able to make the most of their countryside after plans for a new bridle and cycleway were given the green light by the council.

It is hoped the route on land between Hill End Lane and St Michael's Centre, at Cloughfold, will be good for tourism and encourage travel by means other than the car.

Groundwork Rossendale had applied to Rossendale Borough Council for the creation of the bridleway. The combined cycle and bridleway, much of which follows the course of existing footpaths, is a continuation of the work on the Damtop bridleway.

At present much of the route becomes waterlogged or is difficult to pass because of overgrown bushes. It also forms part of a wider cycle and bridleway strategy of which the council is a partner.

The route, which runs parallel to Bacup Road for a short distance before following the route of Hareholme Viaduct, will be made available to walkers, riders and cyclists and people who need wheelchair access.

Seats will be installed at intervals along the pathway, post and rail fencing and replacement trees planted.

Coun Nick Pilling said: "It is part of the scheme to develop cycleways and bridleways throughout Rossendale and is this just one section of that part which will extend from Rawtenstall to Waterfoot. Work will be done on the surface of the route which will provide advantages to walkers.

"A number of bridleways have been opened in the North West in recent years and Lady Towneley was instrumental in doing work in this area.

"It is particularly important in Rossendale because there are a many horse riders in the Valley. It is also good for tourism and leisure activities in the borough."

The route will be formed through a partnership between the council, county council and Groundwork Rossendale with external funding.
