HIGHWAY safety for pedestrians in Barnoldswick will be on the agenda when members of the West Craven Committee meet on Tuesday.

Pendle's highways, engineering and design manager Peter Atkinson, will ask councillors to look at two possible schemes for a footpath link in Manchester Road, from opposite Alma Cliffe to opposite Rydal Mount.

There is currently no path along this stretch of the main road despite it being a well-used link to Letcliffe Park.

The first option, costing £55,000, would provide a new footway, include minor carriageway widening and require gaining land, the diversion of overhead services, civil engineering works, new fencing and possible removal of trees.

Option B would include a stone footpath in the field next to Manchester Road, which would totally separate pedestrians and traffic, apart from at the crossing point to Letcliffe Park.

This scheme would involve new access point, new fencing and permission with the relevant landowners, but would be more environmentally friendly and cost about £6,500.

Lancashire County Council previously indicated it would contribute £2,000 towards the scheme.

Mr Atkinson recommended that members adopt Option B and resolve to identify the relevant funding.
