BURNLEY-born actor Sir Ian McKellen faces stiff competition if he is to win the role of Albus Dumbledore in the next Harry Potter film, it has been reported.
Sir Ian, who plays Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings, was said to be taking over the wizard headteacher, following the death of Richard Harris in October.
But entertainment website E!Online is reporting that Michael Gambon, known for his role in The Singing Detective, has won the role.
If Sir Ian was to play Dumbledore, he would be up against himself at the box office next Christmas, as the next Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films are scheduled for release at the same time.
Warner Brothers, which makes Harry Potter, is not expected to confirm who has won the role until the New Year.
