THE borough of Pendle has won an environmental award in a contest to find Britain's 'greenest' councils.
The Green Apple awards are organised by the independent, non-political Green Organisation.
The award was handed to the council after judges from the Green Organisation, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institute for Waste Management and other independent bodies, inspected its projects.
A group spokesman said: "Pendle Council is active on many environmental fronts. These include an eco show house, an education for sustainability network, a green champions scheme, waste and recycling initiatives, a woodland festival, a food festival, farmers markets, gas-fuelled vehicles, rangers to promote community development, the ownership of parks and other enterprises."
