PLANS to transform the area along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Pendle have moved one step closer with the launch of a new project involving local people.

Residents were invited to a meeting at the Pendle Village Mill tearooms, Brierfield, to discuss ideas about what should be done to the area and how to apply for a grant to fund improvements.

The Canal Corridor Initiative is supported by Pendle Council, Pendle Partnership and British Waterways and will include environmental regeneration along the canal which has already received a £400,000 grant from Pendle Partnership.

It is expected that this could unlock ten times as much money from partners such as British Waterways, the Environment Agency and local businesses and it is hoped the canal improvements will attract shops, bars and leisure facilities to the area and boost tourism and jobs.

Residents and community groups were asked to put forward their ideas for improving the canal and current and potential users of such as cyclists, walkers, anglers, boaters, allotment groups, gardeners or environmentalists were also asked for their views.

Bids for funding from the Canal Corridor Initiative, will be overseen by the stakeholder group involving Pendle Council, Pendle Partnership, and British Waterways.
