REGARDING the 'naming and shaming' of 15-year-old tearaway Aaron Stoddard by Accrington magistrates when they made him subject to an anti-social behaviour order (LET, February 8), I am in Moldova on assignment for the Peace Corps and, as an older person and grandmother of nine children (all back in the United States), I was interested in this young person and the adjudication.

I will be writing about it to our legislatures. This type of action is very good.

Most of my grandchildren live in small towns or villages. Everyone knows them and their parents. Very quickly, even the very minor infractions are reported to the parents and even the school.

"You cannot get away with anything," seems to be a good deterrent to all but the most aggressive, not my grandchildren, thanks be -- they are all super kids. But how much of that good behaviour is due to the sure knowledge that the town will not abide bad behaviour?

For 30-plus years I worked with 'troubled' youth. Keeping the secret of bad behaviour was the best friend they had -- so they thought.
