A COUNCILLOR from Darwen has launched an initiative encouraging more foster carers to come forward and look after children.

The recruitment drive, spearheaded by Coun Sue Reid, executive member for social services, aims to find carers for 20 children from six years old to teenagers.

Coun Reid said: "We want to hear from people who think they've got what it takes to make a difference to the lives of children and youngsters who need care.

"Many people who have fostered say it's the most challenging and rewarding thing they've ever done. It's a chance to change a child's life.

"The children needing a suitable home range from babies to teenagers. Some have disabilities and some need lots of encouragement because of past negative experiences. Placements can last for hours in cases of respite care or for years until the young person can support themselves."

Around 140 children are fostered each year in the borough for reasons varying from neglect, abuse, death in the family and parental difficulties. Four of the 20 children being cared for by the council are in need of respite care and 12 need to live with a family for a short period of time.

The council's family placement team is looking for people aged over 21 with a genuine interest in caring for children who can provide a secure, loving home, regardless of age, race, sexuality, marital status or religion. Support will be made available for children and the carers and allowances will be provided to carers.
