LANCASHIRE'S highly successful home composting scheme has just given away its 50,000th free kit.
The kit consists of a 220-litre compost bin, a lidded kitchen container for collecting raw fruit and vegetable peelings and a Getting Started leaflet, all delivered direct to the householder free of charge. Those who receive a kit are guided through the composting process by regular newsletters, a helpline and the project's website.
Up to 60 per cent of household waste currently thrown away could be composted and turned into a nutrient rich compost.
Digging in the compost or using it as a top dressing on top of the soil will improve soil fertility and help the garden bloom.
