PLAYING an improved brand of soccer against a team that was completely lacking the essential power in attack, Bury won comfortably 2-0 at Hull on saturday to record their fourth success of the season and their second away win.

The points collected were of immense value and the success should be encouraging to the Shakers in their struggle to reach a much safer position in the Second Division table.

From the Bury Times of Friday, November 25, 1977

THERE is a distinct North East flavour about tomorrow's FA Cup first round tie at Hillsborough where Geordies Bob Stokoe of Bury and Jack Charlton of hosts Sheffield Wednesday renew their great rivalry in totally different surroundings to their earlier clashes.

The record books show that outspoken Charlton has an unbeaten record in past confrontations with the new Shakers' boss, four wins in four meetings for Charlton's Middlesbrough while Stokoe was in charge at Sunderland.

At that time, however, Middlesbrough were an emerging force, while over at Roker Park a slide was on the way as Stokoe encountered problems with his 1973 FA Cup-winning heroes.

Now the setting for both managers is entirely different, with Jack facing the threat of a drop into Division Four as Wednesday struggle at the bottom of the Third and Bob hoping to instill new life into a Bury side without in nine league games.
