CHARITY workers today condemned owners who dumped a pet rabbit by the roadside.
The lop-eared rabbit was spotted close to a hutch which was also dumped in Mill Hill Lane, Hapton.
Steve Carpenter, deputy manager of the RSPCA's Altham Animal Centre near Accrington, was horrified to see the rabbit -- now nicknamed Hugo -- by the roadside.
He was taken to the animal centre for a check-up and staff soon realised the rabbit had severely overgrown teeth.
Jeanette Ainscough, centre manager, urged people not to dump pets, even if they are struggling to care for them.
She said: "Hugo would not have survived in the wild. If anyone is struggling to cope with a pet, they should always seek advice from an animal welfare organisation such as the RSPCA. They should never resort to abandoning an animal."
Hugo will eventually be rehomed by the charity, which is also on the lookout for good homes for a number of animals.
