NEWS of a royal visit to a Lancaster school this week has sent a ripple of excitement through the playground and staff room alike.

Central Lancaster High School is playing host to the Earl and Countess of Wessex, pictured left, this afternoon (Thursday) when staff and students will be showcasing what they have to offer.

Head teacher Jon Wright, who will be showing the couple around the Crag Road school, says everyone was 'buzzing as they prepared for the visit.

"Everyone is very excited. You don't get very much notice to get things sorted, and when you do know you can't officially tell anyone. That just turns up the gas a little bit," he says.

The school was officially told about the visit only about a week ago.

"It is our first royal visit and comes in the year we have Investors in People status - it couldn't be at a better time," he told the Citizen.

Mr Wright suspects Prince Edward's interest in the performing arts has partly inspired the visit to the school, which is bidding for specialist arts college status.

The royal couple will be invited to watch a fashion show rehearsal and drama lesson as well as visit the technology block and the school's outdoor sculpture trail.

Year Four pupils from nearby Ridge Primary School, which works closely with the high school, will also be showing off their scientific skills in the technology block.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie will also meet school council members, governors, staff and civic dignitaries, including Lancashire County Council chairman, County Cllr Niki Penney.

The guests of honour will also unveil a plaque commemorating the visit.
