A SOCIAL Services boss today said it was too early to say whether the results of an inquiry into the death of a teenage care home resident would be made public.

Shane Cook, 13, died in the early hours of Sunday after the Ford Orion he was travelling in with four others careered off the A677 Preston New Road at Samlesbury.

A 24-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving and driving while disqualified and was released on police bail. Police are now awaiting the results of blood tests.

Shane lived at the council-run Anchor Avenue home in Darwen. Council bosses said the probe would find out what he was doing out of the home in the early hours.

Ken Foote, the director of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's social services department, said rules on coming in times for children were set and children were immediately reported missing to the police if they did not arrive home on time.

He said: "It's too early to talk about details of any internal enquiries. These will be informed in part by police and coroner investigations. Our thoughts are with the families of the young people involved.

"Procedures are in place for dealing with children who go missing or who do not return home by the time agreed."

Four people in the car were taken to Royal Preston Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
