TEA for two at the House of Commons is up for grabs at the next Royal British Legion dance.

Legion supporter and Leigh MP Andy Burnham, has donated the prize along with two tickets for the Queen's Birthday parade, for a raffle at the event in Leigh Conservative Club on Saturday, May 31.

The modern, Latin and sequence dance, organised by Jan Thomas, of Freshfield Avenue, Atherton, is one of a series of four being organised to promote the much alive Leigh branch.

Formed in 1921 to provide financial help to soldiers injured in the First World War, the Royal British Legion has been providing assistance every since, including helping those who served in WW2 as well as more recent involvements including Northern Ireland, Bosnia and the Gulf.

Ceased

Since the closure of Leigh's Windermere Road HQ in 2000, and consequent sale, many people believe the Leigh branch has ceased to operate.

In fact local members remain active and are working to increase its profile to ensure the continuation of its fund raising efforts.

They enlisted the MP's help and he promised tea for two on the House of Commons terrace as a prize.

Mr Thomas, who has transferred to the Leigh branch to help get it back on its feet, said: "There are many families in the area whose sons and daughters, wives or husbands have been serving in Iraq, so the idea is to show the local ex-Service community that the branch is operational and that there is somewhere for them to turn to if help is required."

Tickets for the dance are available from the Conservative Club, Railway Road, at £4 each, and anyone who would like to help the branch in its work and social activities should contact Mr Thomas on 01942 876583.
