COMMUNITIES in East Lancashire have won a share in more than £13million of lottery cash for long-term projects in the North West.

Pendle and Hyndburn are among 16 areas targeted by £13,088,000 from the new funding scheme, called the Fair Share Trust, which gives cash from the New Opportunities Fund to needy areas which have received less lottery funding than other places.

The cash will be released over a 10-year period for schemes targeting specific local needs such as improving the environment, boosting skills and employment opportunities and helping future funding.

The cash for Pendle will be distributed through the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service in Waterbridge, Whitefield, Bradley, Brierfield and Vivary. A group to distribute the money in Hyndburn has yet to be confirmed.

The organisations responsible for handling the cash will be expected to draw up a strategy to identify the specific needs of the communities they serve, before any definite plans can be made.

Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale CVS development officer Stephen Smith said: "This money is going to improve people's quality of life because the aim is to support initiatives run by and for disadvantaged people."
