A STUDENT from Radcliffe is angered that her controversial artwork was censored when it was displayed at an exhibition.

Rebecca Heyes, aged 21, helped organise the event at Bolton Institute's Deane campus to show creations by herself and fellow students.

But after her own work had been mounted, the college asked her to remove it.

Rebecca, of Turks Road, Radcliffe, had chosen to explore images that are not considered acceptable in public, including pornography and graphic photographs of animal autopsies.

Rebecca, a visual arts degree student, said: "It's ridiculous. My work is of an adult nature, but we are at an adult educational centre.

"My lecturers are all aware of my project and had no problems, it was only when the work was displayed that somebody higher up the college decided it was offensive."

She added: "I understand that it is a public place but they should have said something from the start."

The work is in two sections -- the first, a series of snow shakers fixed to the wall, each containing a pornographic image, and the second, a set of four graphic photographs, including one of a monkey autopsy and an aborted baby.

The entire piece was originally removed from the Eagle Mall Campus exhibition.

A compromise has now been reached allowing the photographs to remain -- but the pornography must be covered at all times.

A spokesman for Bolton Institute said: "This piece of art is of a nature which may cause offence and is in a public thoroughfare open to all -- including children.

"The student was consulted and helped to cover the piece of art herself, including writing her own message.

"She told us she was happy with this compromise.

"If she has changed her mind, she has not let us know."

He added: "The work has been on full display -- but during a well-attended private viewing."
