EX-POLICEMEN across Bury are being asked to strengthen the thin blue line.

In a pioneering scheme and part of Greater Manchester Police's Project 8,000, which aims to bring the number of police officers up to 8,000 by March 2004, "Many Happy Returners" postcards have been sent to each person to have have left the force within the past ten years. The force's current strength is just less than 7,500.

The cards outline why there has never been a better time to rejoin the local force.

Assistant Chief Constable Vincent Sweeney, who is heading up the campaign, said: "Often officers leave the police service to pursue another career, and may feel unable to re-apply to the force if the change fails to live up to expectations.

"Greater Manchester Police does not only welcome applications from such employees, but also offers tailored training and support to make the transition back into the police service as smooth as possible.

"In addition, for women who may have left the force for reasons such as issues with child care, GMP now provides flexible, tailored working hours, assistance with re-training and fitness, as well as a fresh, supportive and welcoming working environment."

The re-recruitment scheme also aims to attract former officers who can bring back a wealth of talent and experience to the fight against crime.

ACC Sweeney added: "We hope that postcards will appeal to and encourage those ex-police officers who have been toying with the idea of returning to the force, bringing 'many happy returners' back to work."

In conjunction with the postcards, GMP is also appealing to trained officers to transfer from other forces and will honour any training qualifications already earned.
