HIGHWAYS chiefs could change a 'dangerous' three-lane road in Lytham into a dual carriageway after a Warton man died following a head-on collision on Friday.

The A584 Preston Road between Lytham and Warton could lose its middle overtaking lane after 40-year-old Warton motorist Colin Stevens sustained multiple injuries in the collision. He died shortly after in hospital.

Fylde Borough and Lancashire County Councillor Bill Thompson said: "It's a dangerous road. I have voiced concerns at County Hall about it. It should be two lanes, or a dual carriageway, with a central reservation.

"I'm asking Graham Harding, the council's highways chief, to have a look at this and see if we couldn't get government money to change it to a dual carriageway."

Cllr Thompson suggested single or dual carriageways with a central reservation instead of the current set up with single lanes and a middle overtaking lane which can be used by drivers going in either direction.

Police are still investigating the cause of Friday's crash in which a Vauxhall Astra collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla.

The Astra's driver, Colin Stevens, of Poplar Drive, Warton, was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital, but died shortly after.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, Alec Webb of Rochdale, sustained fractured ribs and bruises. He was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he received treatment. His wife, Dorothy Webb, who was also in the car, was treated for shock.

The drivers of a Peugeot 206 and a Citroen Berlingo, which narrowly avoided being caught up in the collision, were also treated at Blackpool Vic for minor injuries.

Police appealed for any witnesses to get in touch with PC 1567 Simon Unsworth at Blackpool Police on 293933, quoting log reference 112NQ of 13/6.
