A FORMER judge twice refused to provide drink-drive samples, swearing at a police officer a court has heard.

PC Glen Wright was also kicked on the leg, and struck three times by 50-year-old Linda Lazonby who struggled so violently he had to handcuff her.

And when he tried to sit her on a wall, she kept falling over, magistrates at Preston were told.

Lazonby, of Weets House Farm, Gisburn Old Road, Blacko, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis, and assaulting PC Wright.

The court heard that she had two previous drink-drive related convictions.

Sue McNamara, prosecuting, said PC Wright had received information about a car being driven erratically on Gisburn Old Road at 9.35pm on June 5.

He found the car stationary with the driver's door open and three feet away Lazonby was talking to a man in a garden. Asked if she was the driver, she replied "Mind your own business."

Both Lazonby and the car smelled of intoxicants and when asked to provide a sample, Lazonby refused twice.

She then got out of the police vehicle and when the officer went to detain her, Lazonby, who was wearing slippers, kicked him. She also hit him three times with her hand.

Nigel Holden, defending, said Lazonby had a serious alcohol problem which developed ten years ago.

He said: "She can be in remission for months and then gets the desire to drink."

He told the court she had spent thousands on re-habilitation but was still an alcoholic.

He added: "She is ashamed of what happened. She realises she is becoming a serious danger as far as her conduct is concerned."

The court imposed an interim driving ban, and adjourned sentence until July 30 for reports. Lazonby was granted unconditional bail.
