PUPILS excluded from main stream education have been rewarded for their hard work.

Year 11 pupils at St Thomas's Centre, Lambeth Street, Blackburn, received certificates for their achievements during their stay.

Pupils attending the centre are either temporarily or permanently out of school as a result of illness, pregnancy, exclusion, non-attendance or special needs.

Margaret Nowell, Head of Pupil Referral Unit, said: "When they come here, many are on the bottom line, but we have high expectations of everyone.

"Today is the culmination of those expectations."

Cath Hitchen, assistant director for Inclusion and Access, Blackburn with Darwen LEA, presented certificates to the pupils, who were watched by proud parents and LEA staff.

Coun Mahfooz Hussain, executive member for education and lifelong learning, said: "I congratulate all pupils, especially the Year 11 pupils and wish them all the best for the future."
