BURNLEY pace ace James Anderson aims to leave the Clarets in a spin with a surprise return to Turf Moor today.

The fast bowler is a special guest of Burnley Cricket Club as they take on their footballing neighbours in the annual friendly cricket match.

Anderson, whose meteoric rise has carried him from Lancashire League cricket to full England honours in just 12 months, is currently on a break from international duty.

And Burnley FC secretary Cathy Pickup was quick to offer the local hero a chance to keep his arm in with a light-hearted day of action.

Cathy said: "James is still heavily involved in Burnley Cricket Club and both my husband and son play there.

"James was approached and was delighted to come down as a special guest and make an appearance."

The Clarets' squad will take a welcome break from the slog of pre-season training to don the whites and face Anderson's thunderous deliveries.

Several of Stan Ternent's first team squad are known to be handy with the bat, and previous encounters have seen sterling displays from the likes of Dean West, Glen Little, Gareth Taylor, Paul Weller, Ian Moore and Matt O'Neill.

But it's unlikely they will ever have stood toe-to-toe with one of the best bowlers in the world, who trained with the Clarets in March in the run-up to the cricket season.

The public can catch all the fun in the sun from 3pm onwards and entry fee is £1.50.
