A 33-YEAR-OLD disabled woman was left shaken after a street robbery in Burnley.

The woman, who has not been named, was robbed by a man while sat in her wheelchair in Church Street, on Tuesday morning.

Police are now searching for a man who wore a distinctive white t-shirt with a shiny, silvery, zig-zag lightning design on the front.

The woman had crossed the road near Sainsbury's supermarket at 9.50 am and was making her way down Church Street towards Ormerod Road and the Sparrow Hawk Hotel when she was approached from behind by the attacker.

He asked her for money in what police described as an agressive manner. Fearing for her safety the woman then handed over a handbag containing a Nokia mobile phone, £30 in cash and a black canvas purse with the words Jack Wolfhome printed on the front.

After calling the police, officers searched the surrounding streets but were unable to find the man.

He was described as white, around 22-years-old, with a medium build, redish-brown short hair and was wearing a distinctive T-shirt and a pair of light coloured jeans.

Detectives are hoping that the man's t-shirt will lead to his arrest. Detective Sergeant Pete Simm said: "It is clear this man will have known his victim was a vulnerable member of the public.

"She is disabled and has been left extremely shaken by this robbery. It is a callous crime. We are hoping his t-shirt, which was unusual, will help us catch him.

"If anyone knows someone who has a t-shirt of that description, it could be someone's brother, son, or friend, they should contact us immediately."

Anyone with information should contact Burnley CID on 01282 472159 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
