MEMBERS of a music club will celebrate a hundred years of harmony next month.

The Accrington Clef Club was formed by town music teacher George Oldham, with a membership of just 15.

Set up to study classical music, with pieces performed by the members, they became known as the founders, a title still given to the committee 100 years later.

These days guest performers are also brought in to give recitals, although meetings still take place in Accrington Library.

Membership remained all male until 1990 when women were finally admitted to the group.

The group meets eight times a year and has a membership of around 100. Membership costs £14 a year and the club is trying to raise funds to replace an ageing asset - a Steinway grand piano.

The centenary musical evening will be held in Accrington Town Hall, on Saturday, September 20 and will include performances by concert pianist Martin Roscoe. Details from Keith Tuxford on 01254 236351.
