ANOTHER store in Accrington's new Market Square development is set to open with the creation of 40 new jobs.

Poundland, a discount store, will open the doors of its Broadway site next month.

The market development has been ten years in the planning and, over the last year, construction workers relocated the market to its traditional position alongside the market hall in Peel Street.

Traders relocated to temporary stalls in Blackburn Road and Broadway while the work was carried out.

The construction of Accrington's new shopping development, between Broadway and Peel Street, was completed in early June with the first shops open for business from next month.

Together the market and shops will have cost £8 million.

The news of extra jobs has been welcomed as a boost for the town. Hyndburn Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "I am delighted to welcome Poundland as the first retail company to open for business in the Accrington Market Square development.

"Their creation of 40 new jobs confirms the benefits arising from our investment in the regeneration of the Accrington town centre."

Poundland manager Tom Ricks said: "We have been delighted with the quality of applicants who have come from Accrington and the surrounding areas."

Hyndburn Council now says it has other retailers lined up for the remaining sites. Nigel Rix, director of Hyndburn First, the borough's regeneration body, said: "Local traders are equally enthusiastic. We already have a long waiting list of new traders who would like to do business in the Pavilions."
