I READ with interest the open letter (August 12) from George A. Lee to David Chaytor MP.

I presume this is the same George Lee who was, for many years, a paid official of the Conservative Party where he eagerly defended the Poll Tax, wholesale privatisation of the nation's assets and the complete fiasco of the break-up of British Rail. I could also mention the squander of our national resources, coal, gas and oil.

As an enthusiastic Tory, he considered millions unemployed, record bankruptcies and the destruction of whole communities as evidence of a successful Tory management of the economy, not to mention record rises in crime. I believe that recently he was deputy leader of the council described as "the worst in England".

Just for the record, I will put him right on one or two issues.

We have record numbers in employment, the lowest interest rates for decades, a still growing economy, low inflation, increased numbers of police, plus the biggest ever investment in education, training and health.

Perhaps George will now tell us how a future Conservative Government would maintain Labour's investment and achievements when Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard have promised a 20 per cent cut in spending on public services should they win the next general election.

COUNCILLOR

JOHN BYRNE,

leader of the council.
