PUPILS at the new St John with St Mark School are having a longer summer holiday because of delays in building work.
The Bury primary was due to open on Tuesday (Sep 2) but opened for most children on yesterday (Thurs Sep 4). Youngsters in Years 1 and 2 will not start school until Monday (Sep 8). Parents of nursery and reception age children will be given staggered starting dates from next week.
The Athlone Avenue school was created through a merger of St John's CE Primary School and St Mark's CE Primary School. Located in the former St John's building, it is being substantially extended, adapted and upgraded. Building work is expected to finish in late October.
Head teacher Mrs Janet Moore took the decision to delay the opening after discussions with Bury Council's health and safety staff.
She said: "It is unfortunate, but I am concerned that our children should be able to come into a safe environment and to do that we need to allow this brief delay."
