BUSINESSES are being offered the chance to get vital training in health and safety issues at two seminars next month.

Pendle Council is bringing together a range of experts to conduct two training seminars on safety and health for small and medium sized enterprises across East Lancashire.

In what is seen as a first for the local authority, the seminars will offer training on 'life and death issues' for a wide range of businesses.

The first seminar - Construction Safety Awareness - is on Monday, October 13, in the Wilson Room at Nelson Town Hall.

Topics include asbestos, principles and practice of scaffolding, and white finger vibration. It is aimed at anybody working in the construction and allied trades.

The second seminar - Dangerous Substances - is on Wednesday, October 15, at the same venue.

Topics include chemical substances, principles of risk assessment, occupational asthma, solvents, and health surveillance.

Both seminars are £25 per head and include lunch.

Andy Welton, Pendle Council's health and safety officer, said: "Many small and medium sized businesses simply cannot afford the usual prices of such training - about £200 per person per day.

"At £25, businesses simply cannot afford not to undertake this training which deals with life and death issues for employees and in some cases can make the difference between a business surviving and prospering or ultimately failing."

He added: "For the first time, the local authority has pooled together experts in safety and health, including the Health and Safety Executive and the Construction Industry Training Board to provide this vital training.

"Places are limited to 20 delegates for each seminar, so firms should hurry to reserve a place."
