I AM writing with regard to the editor's comments (Yours Truly, August 28) on the subject of councillors' allowances.
Pardon my confusion, but wasn't this issue discussed at some length 12 months ago in this very paper? I can only presume that the editor is too busy under-paying his own staff, to the extent that they took strike action, to actually read his own paper. Or is he simply following Bury Council's lead and has started recycling?
As I recall, the allowances were recommended by an independent review panel; indeed, Bury was one of the first councils to opt for this approach and it has worked so well that it is now a legal requirement for all councils. But I don't need to explain this to the editor because, if I remember rightly, he actually sat on the review panel!
So, who is really trying to score "political points"?
