I WAS born in 1955, not long after rationing on certain items finally came to an end in Britain, nearly 10 years after the end of the Second World War.

This point dramatically underlines the fact that this country was virtually on its knees in the years following the war.

Yet, incredibly, in 1945, in the face of all these problems, the newly-elected government of the day was able to embark on an ambitious and quite unprecedented house-building programme and set up the NHS virtually from scratch -- in the face, it has to be said, of fierce opposition from the medical profession.

Yet today, this wealthy nation of ours appears incapable of adequately funding our National Health Service.
