REGARDING your report about proposals for red light cameras, headlined "Lights, Cameras, Action!" (LET, September 3), what's all this gong to cost? Maybe the reason drivers speed through Blackburn is they are in a hurry to get out of the place.

I had the pleasure of staying in Harrogate, Yorkshire, some weeks ago. On the Sunday morning, I went a walk around the town centre and the first thing I noticed was that there was no litter, at all.

What a pleasure it was to see a clean town. The council there must take great pride in its upkeep and they also have a keen anti-litter campaign.

The other day, I had reason to go to Queen's Park, Blackburn, for the first time for many years. I had a very big shock. Everywhere, there were chip papers, cans, bottles and rubbish and even a burnt-out car at the top of the park, while all the fencing was broken down.

I feel sorry for those who have lived there for many years. A once-lovely park is now just a dumping ground for rubbish. And it's not just Queen's Park, litter is all over the town.

My advice to the council is leave the motorists alone for once and put money to good use, by cleaning up Blackburn. It's dirty and needs a good wash!

I don't want to start on about dustbins, for I have only six pages left in my note pad.
