A MAN who drove while he was disqualified has had the friend's car he was using confiscated by a court.

The £1,000 Vauxhall Astra GTE, which had been borrowed by banned driver Keith Banks, was ordered to be forfeited by Blackpool magistrates.

Banks, a jobless 38-year-old, of Ruskin Street, Burnley admitted two offences of driving while banned, without insurance or an MOT and obstructing police.

In addition to taking the car, magistrates sentenced Banks to a two-year rehabilitation order with a 100 hours punishment order.

Magistrates also banned him from driving for four years.

David Forbes, prosecuting, said Banks was first stopped on March 30 driving the Astra on the M65.

Then on August 7, Banks was stopped on the M55 at Westby in the same car. On both occasions he gave a false name and address to police.

The prosecutor said: "The same vehicle was being used in both incidents and the court is entitled to consider the forfeiture of that vehicle."

Banks had seven previous convictions for driving while banned.

Dominic Howell, defending, said: "Both times my client's actions were impulsive.

"While not driven by emergencies his actions were driven by emotional needs.

"On the first occasion he was stopped my client wished to tend his mother's grave in Penrith.

"The second time he was assisting a teenage girl he believed to be in danger.

"The car he was driving does not belong to him, but a friend of his - Peter White.

"My client thinks it is worth about £1,000."
