Ian McNabb, at the Albert Halls, Bolton
IN an era where the singer-songwriter appears to be making something of a comeback, it's about time that the talent that is Ian McNabb was finally recognised.
Fans were treated to an evening of high-class entertainment from the man who first hit the charts over 20 years ago as the driving force behind The Icicle Works. This solo show saw the likeable Liverpudlian playing keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar as he ran through some of his comprehensive back catalogue.
Songs were interspersed with chats with the audience which made for a hugely enjoyable night out - it's like having a good mate round to your house who happens to be a brilliant musician. McNabb has and always will be first and foremost a songwriter.
The depth of lyric combined with catchy choruses make for excellent songs. The mystery remains as to why this man is not selling out arenas all over the country. Forget your David Grays, this is what songwriting is all about.
From Icicle Works hits such as Hollow Horse and Birds Fly to solo tracks such as Head Like a Rock and I'm a Genius, McNabb travelled backwards and forwards through time.
If you ever see an Ian McNabb gig advertised and you like good music, just go along. Once you've been to see him, it won't be your last.
