A CAR turned into a fireball when it crashed into a parked vehicle.

The male driver of the Ford Escort managed to scramble free seconds before the car burst into flames in Spring Lane, Radcliffe.

It is believed the driver had lost control after apparently hitting a road sign before colliding with the rear of the parked Hyundai.

Police were quickly at the scene and residents say the police helicopter made several sweeps overhead, apparently to try to locate the driver who ran from the scene.

Owner of the Hyundai, Margaret Atkinson, said: "I heard a bang and then sirens. I went to the front and saw a car on fire.

"Police told everyone to get out of their houses. My front PVC door was warped and a window cracked by the intense heat. I was quite shaken. My car is now a write-off."

Fire crews were at the scene for around 40 minutes. The Escort was extensively damaged. The incident happened at 7pm on Thursday.
