POLICE in Rossendale are warning the public to be on their guard following a spate of "sneak in" burglaries.

Since August 1, almost 50 people in Bacup and Rawtenstall have fallen prey to opportunist thieves who have gained entry to homes by simply walking through unlocked front or rear doors.

Police are urging the public to keep their doors secure, even when they are at home.

Inspector Dave Shepherd said it was better to prevent crime than to have to take action afterwards.

He said: "My advice would be never to leave doors and windows open when you leave the house and to keep doors secure when you are in the house.

"Unfortunately, if you leave your door unlocked you are inadvertently inviting thieves into your home."

He added: "Patrols have been increased in hot spot areas and we are actively targeting suspected criminals but as I'm sure homeowners would agree, it is far better to prevent these crimes happening than to take action after the event.

"That means taking on board simple crime prevention advice and keeping your property secure."

He appealed for information on the crimes, saying: "I would urge anyone who has witnessed anything suspicious in their neighbourhood, or who knows the person or people that might be responsible for these crimes, to come forward with information.

"That information can be passed direct to me, or alternatively people can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

"Calls to Crimestoppers are free and if the information you give to use leads to the arrest and charge of an offender, then you may even receive a reward."
