BAXENDEN captain Paul Mabbutt certainly led by example with a mammoth round of golf to raise cash for a fellow member's daughter.

Paul completed 100 holes in just one day to raise sponsorship money of £1400 for the Jessica Spibey Trust Fund.

He was inspired to help five-year-old Jessica, who suffers from cerebral palsy, after hearing about her problem through other Baxenden members.

Paul said: "Before I became captain I was thinking about doing something for the captain's year for charity.

"I had all sorts of weird and wonderful ideas but didn't have time to do them because I was captain. But I know Tony Spibey and when I heard about his daughter I thought that would be as good a reason as any to do it."

Paul set off at 6am on Tuesday, August 19, and it took him just 11 hours to complete his century at the Accrington club.

He added: "I was only meant to do 72 holes but I was hitting par or just over, so I decided to carry on and do five rounds.

"I wanted to do 90 to really earn my money then did another ten to make the 100.

"I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me, the three caddies, Tony, Maurice Warburton and Ken Hall, and Trish Chippendale for providing refreshments."
