HOUSEHOLDERS in Reedley and Nelson are being asked to say yes to a new recycling scheme.

Five thousand homes are being offered green plastic kerbside boxes to recycle cans, glass bottles and jars.

A fortnightly collection service will start on November 3 and will be made on the same day as the paper and card recycling scheme.

A further 5,000 households will be offered a green box in February next year.

Residents will receive letters from Pendle Council inviting them to display a sticker containing the word "Yes" in their window if they want to receive one of the boxes, which will be delivered from this week onwards.

Funding for the scheme has come from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs waste minimisation and recycling fund.

As more funding becomes available the council hopes to offer the scheme to every home in the borough.

Pendle Council waste management co-ordinator Carole Taylor said: "The new scheme is part of the council's plans to meet the challenging recycling targets in the Lancashire waste strategy.

"Once further funding is identified the scheme will hopefully be offered to all households in the borough."

Councillor John David, portfolio holder for the environment, said: "It is very clear that much more of our hosuehold waste could be recycled if facilities were offered to residents. The council is committed to the Lancashire targets."
