POLICE launched an investigation after the body of an elderly woman was found floating in the canal in Burnley.
The body was spotted by passers-by in Thompson Park at just after 10am yesterday.
Police were called and the underwater search unit were called in to help remove the body, which has now been identified as a local woman.
Her next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination was due to be carried out today to establish the exact cause of death.
Det Sgt Jon Bullas, of Burnley CID, said: "There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death."
