A NEW project to help physically disabled peopleto get involved in their local community through the use of information technology has been officially launched.
'CyberSKills' is a scheme dreamt up by Lancashire County Council's Social Services department, UK online, the New Opportunities Fund, the Department for Education & Skills, and Fujitsu, a global IT and communications company.
The £860,000 project gives disabled people the chance to develop their own independence and build confidence to overcome daily problems - from shopping to finding work.
Already CyberSkills has been set up in UK online resource centres in Chorley, Rawtenstall and Accrington.
Social services staff have been specially-trained so they can support people using the centres.
Cabinet member for adult services & health, County Councillor Chris Cheetham, said: "Thanks to this unique partnership with Fujitsu, disabled people will have opportunities to learn new skills, become more independent and become valued members in their local communities through the use of new information technology.
" This is the new era for social and medical rehabilitation for physically disabled people."
