A DRINK-driver who gave police false details was almost three times the limit, Burnley Magistrates Court heard.

Police who had found an abandoned, damaged car saw warehouseman Kieron Toye, 26, walking nearby.

Toye, of Hargrove Avenue, Burnley, admitted driving with excess alcohol.

Mercedah Jabbari, prosecuting, said police received a message saying a man, believed to be drunk, was driving away from opposite Blockbusters in Burnley.

They were told the vehicle had hit at least one car on Colne Road, Burnley, and not stopped.

Toye and the woman with him said they had just got out of a taxi and could give no explanation why they were in the area.

Miss Jabbari said both seemed anxious and nervous. The defendant smelled heavily of alcohol, was clearly drunk and slurring his words. He claimed he was called Stephen Bruce and lived at the Britannia Hotel.

He was asked if he knew anything about the crashed, abandoned car but denied any knowledge of it.

He was searched and his identity was found in his wallet. A key was found and it was found to fit the crashed car. The lowest of two tests at the police station showed 90 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35.
