Leigh 1st XV 17 Southport 14: LEIGH first XV managed to hang on for a 17-14 home win over Southport.

Leigh missed an early penalty chance, but Southport settled down more quickly and exerted pressure on the home side with some tidy forward play.

Leigh responded in similar fashion and after 10 minutes a powerful drive by Liku carried three defenders over the line. Jones converted for a 7-0 lead.

Southport missed two penalty attempts into a strong wind before Jones increased the lead with a penalty and a half-time score of 10-0.

Leigh opened the second half with some good work by the forwards to set up a good position and then some slick handling saw Anderson break the cover to put Jones between the posts and then convert for a 17-0 lead.

Southport then opened their account with a penalty and, as Leigh slipped into their regular phase of indiscipline, they added two further penalties to reduce the lead to 17-9. Further lack of control then gifted the visitors with a soft try to set the spectators nerves on edge. Leigh had a late opportunity to calm the situation with a penalty award in front of the posts, but a strange decision to tap and go for the line saw the chance ignored, leaving them hanging on to a narrow but just deserved victory at 17-14.

Leigh U18s 29 Vale of Lune13

Leigh won their way into the Lancashire Cup final against more senior opposition who were weakened by late withdrawals on the day.

The home side started strongly and went in from a try by winger Jonathan Bishop. The visitors then gained the lead with a penalty and a try before Ben Halton charged over on the stroke of half time.

The visitors again led with a fine try early in the second half before Leigh gained the ascendancy with tries from Lee Davies, Thomas Andrews and Danny Hurst.

Thomas Andrews completed the scoring with two conversions and produced an outstanding display in the centre. The younger members of the squad, Calvin Crompton, Thomas Martin, Philip Summers, Chris Blinkhorn and Jonathan Bishop deserve special mention for their performance in an older side.

Oldham U14s 22 Leigh U14s 7

Leigh travelled to Oldham with only 12 players due to injuries and came up against a big home side. Leigh soaked up the early pressure but Oldham eventually broke the deadlock to take a 5-0 lead.

Leigh then applied pressure of their own, dominating the scrums and feeding good ball to the backs. Eventually they turned the pressure into points when Leake fed Parkinson from the scrum, the ball was swiftly passed to Davis and Stafford before Brown finished the move, touching down under the posts. Davis added the conversion to give Leigh a 7-5 half-time lead.

In the second half Leigh made some excellent opportunities with good drives from Roberts, Poole, Fiendley and Riley giving the backs the opportunity to use the ball and they were unlucky not to extend their lead. Unfortunately poor handling then let Oldham back into the game with a break away try and conversion and as Leigh pushed for victory with good play from Lees, Hull and Innes they left themselves open to the counter attack and Oldham added two further tries.

Leigh could have won this game but for some poor handling at times, and they can look forward to better things when they are at full strength. Man of the Match was Roberts.

From the Tarlton kick off Lloyd took the ball to out pace the Tarlton cover to score Leigh's second try. Leigh continued to pressure the visitors with good running and passing from Thorpe, Unsworth, Tipper and Moorfield. Leigh's third came from a very good clearance kick by Peet with the entire Leigh team bearing down on Tarlton to put them under pressure. Good ball from Paine, who had a solid game at full-back, fed the the ball out for Williams to score a very good team try, again Browning converted.
