A CHARITY football match between Rossendale United FC and a Manchester United XI, to be staged in memory of popular soccer fan David Taylor, has been cancelled due to the weather.

The game was due to kick-off tonight at Rossendale's Dark Lane Ground, Newchurch, to raise money for a local disabled child with sporting aspirations.

The club and David's family have yet to decide on which charity will receive the money.

David, of Greendale Avenue, Newchurch, who died after a night out in Rawtenstall, will be remembered on a date set to be re-arranged between the two clubs.

Police revealed David, a regular Rossendale United and Manchester United supporter, died following a single head-butt or punch during a night out.

His body was discovered slumped in a shop doorway in Bank Street in July last year.

Andrew McDonald, 19, of Granby Road, Manchester, pleaded guilty to manslaughter when he made a brief appearance at Preston Crown Court earlier this month.

He admitted unlawfully killing David on July 17 last year and was bailed by Judge Peter Openshaw QC until March 22 for sentence.

Kevin Proctor, club secretary at the Unibond first division league club, said the match - set to see Rossendale United, including past and present players, against Manchester United Reserves - will be re-arranged later today.

He added: "The pitch is frozen because of the snow that came down over night. We were aware all along that the weather could hinder the match so Manchester United agreed that we could re-arrange it.

"I will be speaking to somebody later today to arrange another match.

"If anybody has bought any tickets then they will be valid for the re-arranged match or if anybody wants a re-fund for tickets that have already been purchased then that will be arranged."
