TRAFFIC bosses have agreed to consider a new pedestrian crossing in Prestwich following the death of an elderly woman.
Mrs Annie Loughrey (85) died earlier this month in hospital after colliding with a car as she crossed Bury Old Road at its junction with Orange Hill Road, where she lived at Sealand House.
Councillor Stella Smith, executive member for environment and transport, told Wednesday's (Jan 28) council meeting that there had not been enough accidents at the site to normally justify installing a crossing. The last recorded accident, when a pedestrian was slightly injured, was in March 1994.
Coun Smith said the council had put up signs on Bury Old Road warning that elderly people might be crossing near Orange Hill Road.
However, she added: "Following this tragic accident outside Sealand House, investigations will be undertaken to identify whether any form of crossing facility may be provided in this location."
