DEWSBURY RAMS 8 SWINTON LIONS 35

National League Two

WITH no bulls to lock horns with in this division, the Lions took on the Rams in their own backyard and gave them a few lessons in the subtle art of rugby league.

"Our players were totally committed and the defence was awesome," said Lions' coach Paul Kidd.

The Lions took the lead in the 11th minute, when Ayres slotted over an easy penalty goal from in front of the posts. But only lasted four minutes before Adam Thaler kicked a similar goal for the home side.

The Lions then went back into the lead three minutes from the break, when good work by Sarfraz Patel saw Peter Cannon burrow his way over in the corner, and Ayres added the conversion from the touchline to give his side a half-time advantage.

The Lions started the second half strongly, although substitute Mark Pembroke only lasted a matter of seconds as he clashed heads with Tau Liku in his very first tackle and had to leave the field.

After 56 minutes Ayres added a neatly taken drop goal, and on 61 minutes his kick through was latched onto by Maye and he raced between the posts for the touchdown, to which the creator Ayres added the simple goal points.

The Lions then began to cut loose and three minutes later Cannon side-stepped the defence to cross by the posts and again Ayres converted.

It got even better two minutes later when Sinfield and Mark Bolton combined to send Wingfield over for the try.

Ayres was controlling everything the Lions did and it was he and Sinfield again who set up the next try when Hugh Thorpe raced in at the corner for an unconverted score.

The Lions final touchdown came three minutes from time, when Hodson's kick over the line was chased by Maye, who claimed his second try of the afternoon and Ayres added the goal points.

The Rams scored their only try in the final minute when Hawksley slipped Bolton's tackle to cross near the corner and Adam Thaler added the goal, but it was far too little, far too late for the well-beaten Rams.
