A DEPRESSED father-of-four who raided the home of his girlfriend's mother's has been given a community punishment.

Burnley Crown Court heard that Stanley Gallagher, 29, was caught red-handed by his then partner Suzanne Radcliffe.

The defendant was told by Judge Barbara Watson burglary was serious but she bore in mind the circumstances and felt the best way forward was a community sentence.

She warned Gallagher the probation service would need co-operation from him and if he flouted the non-custodial order he would be back before the court.

Gallagher of King Street, Brierfield, admitted burglary. He was given a 12-month community rehabilitation order, to include the Think First programme.

Roger Green, prosecuting, said the daughter of victim Carole Radcliffe had been in a relationship with the defendant.

Gallagher asked his girlfriend's cousin for some money then went to Mrs Radcliffe's Hodder Street, Burnley, home with Suzanne's key.

He took money from the television meter, was caught in the act by his girlfriend and the two of them argued.

Mr Green added Gallagher had previous convictions for damage, shoplifting, wounding, affray, driving while disqualified and had been to jail.

Amy Nicholson, defending, said Gallagher had been taking diazepam and was depressed.

He committed the offence weeks after his four children had been adopted without his consent.
